Susquehanna River © BGS

I just had to put this in here because I honestly believe that the Susquehanna River, around the Harrisburg, PA vicinity, has got to be the best smallmouth river in the country. I have caught over 50 smallies in the 2-3 pound plus class in less than 4 hours. They are all healthy, strong and pretty fish. And the best part- you don't need a boat or a guide. You can wade in the water up to your knees (in the summer) and catch the smallies that are stacked up in deeper pockets. Just tie on a small spider jig, nymph, etc. in pumpkin pepper and you can catch a smallie on every cast. Let me show you where I go:

You can get here by taking the PA Turnpike and getting off at one of two exits. Either the Rt. 81 exit or the Rt. 15 exit. Either way take 81 or 15 North to Rt. 11 North. You'll find parking off of the side of the road on Rt. 11. I'm not exactly sure where I parked but I walked the railroad tracks until I found an opening down to the River. Stay between the RR tracks and Cox Island. By the way, don't fish here when the water is high. Take a life jacket with you- it's not a bad idea to wear it. I fished it during a summer drought so the water was low. Also, BE CAREFUL ON THE RR TRACKS. Trains do use these tracks. BE ALERT! Let me know how you make out- Webmaster- Rob Muller.

Guide Service:

In my opinion, you don't need a guide to catch fish here. You'll catch fish if you just go to the place and use the lures I referenced. Good Fishn.
