About the Lake
Lake Anna is a 9,600 acre
body of water between Richmond, VA and Washington, DC. What makes
Lake Anna different than most lakes that you'll visit is the
presence of a Nuclear Power Plant on the lower half. Differences
of 6 degrees can be found from the upper and lower halfs. If the
water is in the high 30's on the upper half, water can be in the
mid to high 40's from the Route 208 Bridge to the dam.
What and Where to fish
?
Traditionally, the creek
channels, drop-offs, points and humps are best to target. When
fishing tight to cover fish a bl/blue jig n pig. There is not
much wood cover in the lake so if you do find some, work it well.
I've heard Ken Pendrod likes to use the jig n pig as well as the
Silver Lucky in 1/2 oz. Hop these baits off the bottom for better
results. When the wind blows- a Spinnerbait off the points can't
be beat. Keep and eye out for the 14 brush-and-block fish
shelters that the Virginia Power has constructed throughout the
lake. They are well marked. If the fishing really gets tough,
switch to small grubs and gitzits. In the early spring,
concentrate on the lower half. The Nuclear Power Plant's
superheated discharge runs through ponds and eventually through
Dike #3 adjacent to the dam.
When to fish ?
February and March are
probably the best times to fish Lake Anna. Since, the Nuclear
Power Plant discharges warmer water in the lower half most fish
really don't have to adjust to winter like they do up north. The
warm water discharge attracts the baitfish thus the bass.
How to get there ?
Use I-95 South to the Rt.606W
exit. I'm not sure if there is an exit for Rt. 208. If not I know
there is a Rt. 606W exit and that runs right into Rt. 208. I
think most tournaments use the Anna Point Marina off of Rt. 208
before the Rt. 208 bridge.
